My Way or The Highway

Excuses-2

As I reflect on my weekend, I see that I have made many excuses for why I cannot accomplish the things I set out to do, promised or planned. I then find myself being angry. Angry that I could not get what I had planned done – angry that things didn’t go my way. I found myself acting like a child who could not go outside and play because they had to do their chores. As I reflected, I was convicted of how my heart truly was. I longed to please myself, and if I could not do that I threw a tantrum. I shut down. How many times do we find ourselves making excuses, throwing tantrums when things don’t go our way or do things primarily for the benefit of ourselves? Now don’t get me wrong, it’s wonderful if we treat and enjoy ourselves! However, we do need to be cautious that we do not make ourselves our main priority. What I mean by that is that we were not placed on this earth to glorify ourselves; we were placed here to glorify God and only God.

On Sunday, my pastor was preaching from Matthew 6:19-34. That entire sermon stuck with me and convicted me in a way I have not felt. The main point of the sermon was to seek Jesus first above all else. It was then focused on our perceptions- what drives/fuels them, human conditions and how God addresses human condition. As he was speaking, he touched on greed. Basically greed shapes our perceptions and greed isn’t necessarily money. Sometimes greed is tangible things such as status, power, food. Jesus is addressing the tangible things in our hearts. Matthew 6:21 says where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Greed is something you want bad enough that you go after it and put all your efforts into it.

Friends take a close look at your lives and address your heart. The things we may desire may not be wrong or bad at all, however, when it consumes your mind, heart, soul and time then it may not be worth it. Greed fuels and changes your heart, and my friends, we long for a heart after God’s own heart. We must let go of our control and be obedient to God to help us get rid of our greed, our excuses. Although we may not get exactly what we want when we want it, we have a God who gives us everything we need! Don’t make excuses for why you can’t do things because in the end they are just words. We need to put actions behind our words and make sure our word is good. Don’t be discouraged if things don’t go as planned because everything happens for a reason and it is all in God’s timing!

Stay Blessed!
